Very similar to blog post #7, my final blog assignment is going to be focusing on what I learned and took away from this class the past few months. I will first mention the two films we watched in class “Miss Representation” and “The Mask You Live In”, along with the short clip on Plato’s Cave. I also will be talking about these four components: My author identity, my theory of writing, my growth as a writer, and my knowledge transfer to future writing situations.
The two films “Miss Representation” and “The Mask You Live In” has helped me grow as a person. They both discuss in depth about how not only society, but the media and even your parents have extreme impact on the way you view femininity and masculinity. In today’s generation females are being judged for almost everything they do. Women aren’t looked at as “smart” or educated. They have this image of not being able to complete the same tasks as men. And if you think women have it hard, men also deal with daily struggles just as much as us women do. It is socially “not acceptable” for men to cry or show any types of feelings or emotions. These films have motivated me to make change in the world and to not view others based on what society has to say about them. In relation to Plato’s Cave, what I interpreted from that short clip was that there were prisoners that have been locked away their whole life. Had no experience with the world itself, only with what they had been told. This relates to the two films because we grow up with our families and the media creating these stereotypes about men and women and we believe that it is normal. It is unfortunate that our generation is still dealing with the same issues as a clip from thousands of years ago. The two films and the short clip has given me a better understanding of the difficulties both men and women face and taught me that I should be more considerate of those daily struggles. My author identity has most definitely changed in this course. I can now say that I am a blogger and website owner. Throughout this course I have posted many blogs on not only my website, but on my classmates websites as well. We discussed a variety of topics in each blog post and got to design our own webpages. Differing from the beginning of this course, I now enjoy writing and look at it as a way to get all of my thoughts in order and also have better understanding of certain concepts. My theory of writing has been greatly impacted by this course. I value writing a lot more because I feel it is important to write down your thoughts and opinions for your own sake and not always just to get a response from someone else. One specific concept I valued that we talked about in class was DAT. When writing narratives; description, action, and theme are the main points you should include in your piece. Before this class, I wasn't aware of this concept and when I used DAT in my own writing it had benefited me tremendously. It made it easier for my audience to put themselves in my shoes while reading my memoir and it really improved my writing skills when focusing on narratives. My past academic writing experiences differ from my present experiences because I was never aware of audience.I had never thought about an audience when writing, but it is important that you target a specific group of people because that is what determines the content. My past and present writing experiences are similar because I am still interacting with others while writing, which I mention in my vlog for blog post #7. Sharing content with each other has made me a lot more comfortable when being open with my writing. My writing knowledge has definitely grew throughout this course and continues to. I now understand processes and how to come up with ways to achieve your goals. For example, drafting your content early and being good at time management. I can use both of these concepts in future situations that are not only academic. Being early and managing my time can be applied in a work setting as well. Everything I had taken away from this course will benefit me in some way and will encourage me to push myself in order to develop a growth mindset.

Daniel and I have recently finished our first draft of our research project. In order to make revisions, we brought our hard copy of the project to class on Thursday along with a print out of the assignment sheet. After receiving feedback from Professor Mangini our paper will be complete. We hope that our project has significant impact on not only teenage girls, but women as a whole. The points that we focus on are extremely important when involving toxic behavior in young women. We want to see change in the future when it comes to social media degrading women and making them feel less beautiful. Our goal for this paper was truely to make meaning and show how women are worth more than what is portrayed through media.
We also reviewed our classmates prefaces, this helped because having another set of eyes looking at your work can help find mistakes you overlooked. Another very important thing Daniel and I did this week for our project was re-evaluate our sources and make sure they were credible sources, if they were not then a lot of our argument would be false or unbelievable. Me and Dan are just about finished our final draft of our research project. We have some tiny details that we want to go over but other than that we feel as if our project is the best it can be. We believe that our paper will have an impact on anyone who decides to read it. We give a detailed explanation as to why our thesis statement "Social media has influenced toxic behaviors in young women by making them insecure." holds a very real meaning. We give a wide variety of meaningful statistics as well as counter arguments for our stance on the matter. So that the audience does not finish our paper with questions and concerns about our argument. Something that really helped guide us through the writing process in this project was not just watching Miss Representation but reading the transcript because this gave us a better understanding of the films discourse, the better we understood the film the better we could present our opinions that were supported by facts we found.
In this blog post I am going to explain the topic for my research paper which is going to be co-authored with Daniel Weaver Cooke. We will be describing the genre, medium, citation style, ect. This post will give you insight on what our project will mainly be about.
For our argument, Daniel and I decided to focus on the question “How does social media animate toxic behaviors in teenage girls”. Our main resource is going to be from the film “Miss Representation”. We chose to write this project in MLA research paper format and in a google doc that is shared between us. Our primary audience is going to be targeted at teenage girls and we are going to focus on both personal experiences and global. We hope to give people a good understanding of what is really going under right under your nose in American Media. We believe that it is not fair for all of these people to go throughout life not knowing what is going on around them. In our writing we utilized everything we went over in class. The notes taken about how to express our points clear, and direct to our audience as well as making it so our bias and objectives were clear. We tried to use all the precise steps it takes to create a convincing and moving research argument like ours. We believe that after our fellow classmates read our work they will have an even better understanding of what we learned in class and what they wrote in their own research papers. In this blog post I am going to be comparing the messages in Plato's cave with the two films we had watched, “Miss Representation” and ‘The Mask You Live In”.
In plato’s cave it seemed to be that the prisoners have been locked away their whole life so they don’t know any better and think that, that is a normal way to treat someone. This explains that when the one prisoner got to experience the world and came back describing what he had discovered, none of the other prisoners could understand what he was saying. I feel like this relates to the two films because we grow up with our families and the media creating these stereotypes about men and women and we believe that it is normal to view women as “weak” or think that it is not okay for men to cry. I also think the two films could relate to plato’s cave in a way that each shadow on the wall represents a person and the prisoners are society interpreting each shadow without actually knowing who that person is nor having basic knowledge about them. In this blog post I am going to be answering a few questions about the film we were required to watch at home, The Mask You Live In. I will be explaining how the film made me feel, how it made me think, and how it impacted me. Also I will be talking about how the film made me want to make a positive change involving all men around the world.
The film The Mask You Live In makes me feel hopeless. As a man in today’s society your ego is more important than your heart. I genuinely feel bad that young boys and men have so much pressure on them. It is heartbreaking to see young boys being teased and taunted because they are not being “manly enough”. The film makes me think that maybe if the music industry, famous rappers or even professional sports players could be better role models and rap or talk about these issues that they face on a daily basis that it could possibly have positive impact on the way men are portrayed. I think most fathers also have a lot to do with why society views men how they do because of the way they raise their sons from such a young age. They teach them that you are not allowed to cry or show any type of emotions and this seems to cause many problems when the boys start to get older and deal with a lot. They feel like they cant talk to anyone about their issues because that's how they were raised and that's exactly what society told them not to do. The film The Mask You Live In makes me want to do something to show men and young boys that it is a good thing to show emotion and talk about how you feel. Everyone is human, we all deal with emotions good and bad and we should be able to be comfortable talking about them without being judged. In this blog post I am going to be answering a few questions about the film we watched in class, Miss Representation. I will be explaining how the film made me feel, how it made me think, and how it impacted me. Also I will be talking about how the film made me want to make a positive change involving all women around the world.
The argument in Miss Representation made me feel embarrassed. Why is it that just because you are a female you are viewed as “weak” or looked down upon? Women are just as capable of doing the same things as men, society just does not give them a chance to prove themselves. In a way, the film also made me feel hopeless because it has been over 150 years and women are still facing the same problems and doing very little about it. The argument makes me think that if the media continues to portray woman the way that it does now, we are less likely to make change in the future for women. We are too caught up trying to mimic the unrealistic lives we see on social media rather than stand up for ourselves and make a difference in the world. The argument in the film Miss Representation motivates me to do better and be better in order to prove society wrong. It makes me want to show all women more love and support. The film made me realize just how bad the media has impacted all women negatively. I catch myself body shaming and talking about myself in negative ways in front of my little sisters and I don't want to be that role model. I don't want my little sisters growing up thinking that they're not beautiful or not good enough. For them, myself, and all women around the world it is important to show self love and to believe in yourself and to not let society's view on women belittle you. Prove them wrong and make a difference. In this blog post I am going to explain the relationship between our discourse community values, the article What is Literacy? By James Paul Gee and the poem We Are Many by Pablo Neruda. The genre I am going to use for my interpretation is the traditional analysis essay where I am going to talk about how I think all three texts are connected in some way.
In our discourse community we share the same goals and values. These values are located on Professor Mangini's website where we can all view them. For an example of what makes our discourse community we all have our own websites and blog posts. Each of us has created our own website to create content on, where we all get the same prompt and are able to share our work with each other. We also meet in the same classroom at the same time and receive the same emails which is how we intercommunicate in our discourse. Without these concepts our discourse community would not be distinctive. In the poem We Are Many by Pablo Neruda I believe he is saying that each person has multiple people in them because of the different discourse communities they are apart of. For every discourse community they are apart of, they become a new person. Just how each of us in our class are one person there then we leave and all go to a different discourse community where we become someone else. We have different goals, talk about different topics and communicate in different ways than the other discourse communities we may be involved in. This is what makes every discourse community unique in their own way. In the article What is Literacy? James Paul Gee explained how literacy is quite similar to discourse communities. He talked about how there are various types of literacy just how there are discourse communities. I liked how James Paul Gee said “ individuals give body to a discourse everytime they act or speak, thus they carry it and ultimately change it through time” I found this fascinating because we don't really pay attention to the different types of discourses we are actually involved in and how people in the same discourse community are also apart of so many more. We all have knowledge on different discourses that could be shared within the same one and that, that knowledge being shared could have impact on that discourse community.
