In this blog post I am going to be answering a few questions about the film we were required to watch at home, The Mask You Live In. I will be explaining how the film made me feel, how it made me think, and how it impacted me. Also I will be talking about how the film made me want to make a positive change involving all men around the world.
The film The Mask You Live In makes me feel hopeless. As a man in today’s society your ego is more important than your heart. I genuinely feel bad that young boys and men have so much pressure on them. It is heartbreaking to see young boys being teased and taunted because they are not being “manly enough”. The film makes me think that maybe if the music industry, famous rappers or even professional sports players could be better role models and rap or talk about these issues that they face on a daily basis that it could possibly have positive impact on the way men are portrayed. I think most fathers also have a lot to do with why society views men how they do because of the way they raise their sons from such a young age. They teach them that you are not allowed to cry or show any type of emotions and this seems to cause many problems when the boys start to get older and deal with a lot. They feel like they cant talk to anyone about their issues because that's how they were raised and that's exactly what society told them not to do. The film The Mask You Live In makes me want to do something to show men and young boys that it is a good thing to show emotion and talk about how you feel. Everyone is human, we all deal with emotions good and bad and we should be able to be comfortable talking about them without being judged.

In this blog post I am going to be answering a few questions about the film we watched in class, Miss Representation. I will be explaining how the film made me feel, how it made me think, and how it impacted me. Also I will be talking about how the film made me want to make a positive change involving all women around the world.
The argument in Miss Representation made me feel embarrassed. Why is it that just because you are a female you are viewed as “weak” or looked down upon? Women are just as capable of doing the same things as men, society just does not give them a chance to prove themselves. In a way, the film also made me feel hopeless because it has been over 150 years and women are still facing the same problems and doing very little about it. The argument makes me think that if the media continues to portray woman the way that it does now, we are less likely to make change in the future for women. We are too caught up trying to mimic the unrealistic lives we see on social media rather than stand up for ourselves and make a difference in the world. The argument in the film Miss Representation motivates me to do better and be better in order to prove society wrong. It makes me want to show all women more love and support. The film made me realize just how bad the media has impacted all women negatively. I catch myself body shaming and talking about myself in negative ways in front of my little sisters and I don't want to be that role model. I don't want my little sisters growing up thinking that they're not beautiful or not good enough. For them, myself, and all women around the world it is important to show self love and to believe in yourself and to not let society's view on women belittle you. Prove them wrong and make a difference. In this blog post I am going to explain the relationship between our discourse community values, the article What is Literacy? By James Paul Gee and the poem We Are Many by Pablo Neruda. The genre I am going to use for my interpretation is the traditional analysis essay where I am going to talk about how I think all three texts are connected in some way.
In our discourse community we share the same goals and values. These values are located on Professor Mangini's website where we can all view them. For an example of what makes our discourse community we all have our own websites and blog posts. Each of us has created our own website to create content on, where we all get the same prompt and are able to share our work with each other. We also meet in the same classroom at the same time and receive the same emails which is how we intercommunicate in our discourse. Without these concepts our discourse community would not be distinctive. In the poem We Are Many by Pablo Neruda I believe he is saying that each person has multiple people in them because of the different discourse communities they are apart of. For every discourse community they are apart of, they become a new person. Just how each of us in our class are one person there then we leave and all go to a different discourse community where we become someone else. We have different goals, talk about different topics and communicate in different ways than the other discourse communities we may be involved in. This is what makes every discourse community unique in their own way. In the article What is Literacy? James Paul Gee explained how literacy is quite similar to discourse communities. He talked about how there are various types of literacy just how there are discourse communities. I liked how James Paul Gee said “ individuals give body to a discourse everytime they act or speak, thus they carry it and ultimately change it through time” I found this fascinating because we don't really pay attention to the different types of discourses we are actually involved in and how people in the same discourse community are also apart of so many more. We all have knowledge on different discourses that could be shared within the same one and that, that knowledge being shared could have impact on that discourse community.
