Very similar to blog post #7, my final blog assignment is going to be focusing on what I learned and took away from this class the past few months. I will first mention the two films we watched in class “Miss Representation” and “The Mask You Live In”, along with the short clip on Plato’s Cave. I also will be talking about these four components: My author identity, my theory of writing, my growth as a writer, and my knowledge transfer to future writing situations.
The two films “Miss Representation” and “The Mask You Live In” has helped me grow as a person. They both discuss in depth about how not only society, but the media and even your parents have extreme impact on the way you view femininity and masculinity. In today’s generation females are being judged for almost everything they do. Women aren’t looked at as “smart” or educated. They have this image of not being able to complete the same tasks as men. And if you think women have it hard, men also deal with daily struggles just as much as us women do. It is socially “not acceptable” for men to cry or show any types of feelings or emotions. These films have motivated me to make change in the world and to not view others based on what society has to say about them. In relation to Plato’s Cave, what I interpreted from that short clip was that there were prisoners that have been locked away their whole life. Had no experience with the world itself, only with what they had been told. This relates to the two films because we grow up with our families and the media creating these stereotypes about men and women and we believe that it is normal. It is unfortunate that our generation is still dealing with the same issues as a clip from thousands of years ago. The two films and the short clip has given me a better understanding of the difficulties both men and women face and taught me that I should be more considerate of those daily struggles. My author identity has most definitely changed in this course. I can now say that I am a blogger and website owner. Throughout this course I have posted many blogs on not only my website, but on my classmates websites as well. We discussed a variety of topics in each blog post and got to design our own webpages. Differing from the beginning of this course, I now enjoy writing and look at it as a way to get all of my thoughts in order and also have better understanding of certain concepts. My theory of writing has been greatly impacted by this course. I value writing a lot more because I feel it is important to write down your thoughts and opinions for your own sake and not always just to get a response from someone else. One specific concept I valued that we talked about in class was DAT. When writing narratives; description, action, and theme are the main points you should include in your piece. Before this class, I wasn't aware of this concept and when I used DAT in my own writing it had benefited me tremendously. It made it easier for my audience to put themselves in my shoes while reading my memoir and it really improved my writing skills when focusing on narratives. My past academic writing experiences differ from my present experiences because I was never aware of audience.I had never thought about an audience when writing, but it is important that you target a specific group of people because that is what determines the content. My past and present writing experiences are similar because I am still interacting with others while writing, which I mention in my vlog for blog post #7. Sharing content with each other has made me a lot more comfortable when being open with my writing. My writing knowledge has definitely grew throughout this course and continues to. I now understand processes and how to come up with ways to achieve your goals. For example, drafting your content early and being good at time management. I can use both of these concepts in future situations that are not only academic. Being early and managing my time can be applied in a work setting as well. Everything I had taken away from this course will benefit me in some way and will encourage me to push myself in order to develop a growth mindset.
